A triumph in glitter
I reckoned that I could have a great party in Belfast so at home I talked about it with Mum and Dad, my sisters and brother and we reckoned it could work. We aimed for 200 people. I chose the night of 29th December (a Monday) so that it was between Christmas and New Year's Eve and most people would be home. Venue: the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel, near Belfast. I didn't want to do any food or anything - it had to be kept as simple as possible. The disco and bar was enough for everyone to have a great night! The DJ was from Cool FM, Belfast's biggest local radio station. Everyone at home was very keen and also offered lots of help. Back in London, I started getting tickets ready to send out. I wanted people to pay at the door on the night as this way I thought more people would be able to come instead of thinking they were to late to apply for tickets. Everyone at work helped get the tickets ready. I told Louise Hannah, one of our designers, the sort of thing I wanted and she came up with the great silvery design. Our printers, 'Work of Art', printed them for us for nothing and soon we had 400 tickets. The theme was glitter because I wanted it to be black tie but needed some sort of gimmick too. Even thought it was Christmas I didn't want it to be obviously Christmas-y but wanted it to be smart. For some reason the glitter theme seemed to catch everyone's attention! I sent out several tickets to about 30 people and asked them in turn to send them out to others. I was also scouting for raffle prizes and sorting out the raffle. Word was starting to spread - the Northern Ireland grapevine sprang into its usual action! On the day of the party, having been fairly busy with Christmas preparations over the last week, I was generally losing my mind! Good friends Kevin and Roanna came over from London for the party and helped. Barry, my brother and my sister, Veronica, took turns in selling raffle tickets and so did my friends. Raffle prizes included a jacket worn by Denzil Washington in the film 'Courage under Fire', hairdressing and beauty salon vouchers, restaurant tokens, a pearl bracelet, several Simply Red CDs signed by Mick Hucknall that had been sent to Nikki, lots of booze, subscriptions for Marie Claire and Loaded, a weekend for two at the Holiday Inn given by Jon Doubt, and of course some chocolates! The raffle raised about £400. We had about 250 people. The total stands at £2,300 and I'd really like most of it to go towards the continued production of this newsletter, perhaps some to kick start some other fund-raising events and some to Leukaemia Research. Perhaps the next party will be in London, perhaps Cheshire - or anywhere! We're with Damon
